new site, new beginnings

new beginningsHello and welcome to the all new jonchant.com! So I finally got around to buying my own domain and webspace in January And now, a month later, I have finally tweaked wordpress around enough to my liking and present to you my all new and improved blog! Hope you all like it!

Now I finally have someplace to share all my photos! Alas, the free photo services just didn’t cut it for me. Either having limited disk quotas or limited resolutions, none of the free services on the web were up to my liking. With the freedom I have now with no space or bandwidth limitations, I’m free to share as many and as large of photos as I want! Only thing is, I need find a good photo management system or make one myself first (which is highly unlikely). So, hopefully in the coming weeks and months, I’ll slowly get my photo collection online to share with the world.

Feel free to comment and suggest anything for my website!

something more…

It’s been a really long time since I’ve even touched this blog. Surprisingly, people have still come and visited over the last 7 months, even though there has been nothing new to read. Well, now you have something new to read!

So, two things: my online presence is back, and there’ll be some minor changes. This blog will be a little less random. No more “Today I…” or “I did this today…”. Each entry will have some substance, even if it’s not huge. It’s not that my blog’s been totally random, I think I’ve contributed a few worthwhile reads, but some entries have been pretty useless. So, no more of those. Plus, no more of “it’s been a while…” (this entry will be the last time I ever say anything remotely like that, I promise).

Why this change? Well, I guess it comes down to the title of my blog: “none live for themselves” This isn’t a blog to just serve myself and act as a record of my doings, but hopefully it somehow benefits you, the reader, in some small way. Whether you laugh or smile because of something written here or you think longer about a certain subject or (by some small chance) you learn something new, I hope these pages of my ramblings in cyberspace won’t just be another way for you to waste your time, but it actually adds a bit of substance to your life, no matter how tiny.

So stay tuned for something more…

preview to my next entry:

“If at the end of the day, there’s someone out there who
has a better day because of us…
then we’ve succeeded.”

bonus points to those who can guess what it’s about!

1 year

Hmmm…don’t know if I should share this, but whatever, it could be worse… I don’t think with my heart, do I?

Your Brain is 67% Female, 33% Male

Your brain leans female
You think with your heart, not your head
Sweet and considerate, you are a giver
But you’re tough enough not to let anyone take advantage of you!

What Gender Is Your Brain?

So, it’s been 1 year to the day since I started this blog. Lots has happened. Some good, some bad, but all worth it. Here’s to another year of online randomness!

themes, trains, & tcelebrations (the ‘t’ is silent, couldn’t think up of another ‘t’ word, so i made one up)

As you may have noticed, I’ve changed the look of my blog recently. This was more for practical reasons than aesthetics. I loved the old theme, but the blog column was too narrow, I couldn’t put pictures in the middle of text effectively, so I changed it to this one. Hope ya like it.

Just got back into TO from Leamington this evening. Nothing too eventful, same train ride as always. Last night was good though: attended Steve’s & Vicki’s after wedding celebration last night. Good times. :) Really cool to see them last night. Can’t believe Steve’s all grown up and married now. But yeah, it’s really cool to see how they’ve been brought together. Even though I don’t know them as well as I did when I was in high school, you could just sense that they were made for each other. Saw a slides how of their wedding in Mexico. Absolutely gorgeous.

Though I doubt you’ll read this: Steve, Vicki, congratulations! May God bless your marriage and your life together as husband and wife!

long weekends and patio nights

It’s been a while since I’ve written anything, so here’s a little update. Went home last weekend for the long weekend. Lots of fun and rest. Good home cooking. Saw Talladega nights with Jeff & Peters. Good times. “Watch your mouth, you little pot-licker, or I’ll throw you in a microwave!” :) Ran into Phil at the train station and rode back with him and Steve to T dot. We actually got into a serious conversation about the Harry Potter books and whether or not Snape is evil and if Dumbledore is dead or not. Kind of funny now that I think about it, never thought I’d have such a serious conversation about a kids book.

Back at work on Tuesday. Almost done, couple more weeks. Pretty uneventful since Tuesday except for last night. Went out to eat with Niki, Gizelle, Jon Shui & Andrea after worship practice at Thai Paradise. Perfect weather for eating on the patio. Great idea Jon! I even got a free meal out of it. All I had to do was eat the remaining hot sauce. mmmm….paid for that today in the washroom…ah well, it was worth it.

Testing out this new browser, Flock. An all in one browser where I’m suppose to be able to blog and post photos right from the browser directly. So far so good.

Gonna sign off with a hilarious article found today: Optimus Prime

EDIT: Forgot to post this, if any of you are interested in seeing more Brazil pics, check out some of the other team members’ pictures here:

Chris: Chris’s Brazil Photos
Kathy: Kathy’s Brazil Photos
Ling: Ling’s Brazil Photos
Luisa: Luisa’s Brazil Photos, Luisa’s Pre-Brazil Photos

These are probably more interesting than mine too since some have captions. I’m always too lazy to put captions in.

so the adventure begins…

It’s been a while since I’ve posted (not counting the previous post, but even then, that was almost 2 weeks ago). Trying to figure out why exactly I have blog. At first, it was purely because almost everyone else had one except me, so not wanting to be left out, I joined in. I guess now though, I want this to have some sort of purpose. Whether it be a place people can see what’s happening in my life (I’d have to start posting more regularly then) or just an outlet for me to write down my thoughts, I’ll be thinking it through. One thing’s for certain though, I’ll try to include a picture in each post to make it more aesthetically pleasing. After looking at the text only entries, my blog looks pretty boring. So hopefully I’ll have this figured out after my trip. Speaking of which…

JesusDepending on how fast you read after I post, I’ll either be a Pearson International Airport, be on a plane on the way to Brazil, or already in Brazil. 10 days in a foreign country where I don’t know the language (Portuguese by the way, not Spanish) and know even less about the culture to help run an English camp and spread the word about Jesus…should be a blast!

Thank you to all of you who are praying for the team and I. I’ll make sure to take lots of pictures and tell all of ya about it when I get back.

Expecting great things from God…

it’s a beautiful day! *insert guitar riffs here*

What a beautiful day it was today! Too bad most of it was spent working inside. :( But I there is some good news and bad news. First the bad news: Montreal was eliminated last night and I can't pre-order the Starfield CD cause you have to have an US address. Boo-urns! Good news: I'll save $10-$11 on the new Starfield album when it comes out on iTunes and I had a spifferriffic time enjoying the company of most of next year's CCF committee (we missed ya Grace & Lemuel!) in Korea town tonight (or I guess technically last night). Yummy Korean food, adventures in a Korean supermarket, topped off with sweet, sweet cake and good discussions for dessert! Tianne, Gizelle, Yuan, & Mike, thanks for the good times and I can't wait to see what this next year has in store for us!

Also, posted up another new section: lessons. This is where I'll be just posting the things life has taught me. I have a feeling most of them will be either random things or silly things, probably not too many serious lessions, but some.

New intern will be coming to work next week! Woohoo! Get to work with another student for the next 4 months. Can't wait! This should be an awesome summer!

none live for themselves?

So, my parents and sister are back home now (in the best place to live in Canada, ;) ). Just saw them last night as they made a stop here in TO before heading home. Can't believe my sister has already finished a year of university. Man I'm getting old.

Speaking of the end of the school year, this always seems to be the time when everyone (in university/college at least) seems to be pondering where they are going. A lot of people I've been talking to, or from reading their blogs, seem to be asking, what's next? What am I going to be doing for the rest of my life? Or as John Mayer puts so eloquently, we all seem to be going through a "quarter-life crisis." I know I've been thinking about this again this year. Should I work after I graduate? Get my P. Eng? Should I apply for teacher's college? I don't know. It's all up in the air right now.

There is one thing I do know for sure though, whatever I'm doing, it will have to be for the service for God and for other people, not for myself. This is my purpose in life is and hence the name of my blog, "none live for themselves." I picked this phrase up from a book I read last year, The Vision and the Vow by Pete Greig. It's an excellent book about Greig's journey in the years following the words he wrote in The Vision and the challenge he gives us all. Throughout the book and specifically in one chapter, he talks about The Honorable Order of the Mustard Seed, which was this secret society formed back in the 18th century (by a German teenager no less) with one simple purpose: to live for Jesus Christ. All of them wore a ring with a Greek inscription literally saying, "no man liveth for unto himself" but Greig used the non-gendered translation, as have I for my blog, "none live for themselves." So I've adapted this as my single purpose in life and I have a long ways to go. But I sincerely hope and pray that this be my passion and that everything I do will not be for me, but for service of God and the service of others.

none live for themselves

up 2 games!!!

Yay Habs! What a game! Double overtime! I can't believe we blew the 3-0 lead, but at least we got the win and that's all that matters in the playoffs. Wooooo!

Put up another section on the blog. I put up the slideshow from the grad dinner and some of the videos I took. I'll be putting up more videos in the future.

Speaking of grad dinner, what a great night that was on Friday. Good times, good times. Still trying to process that I won't be seeing some of these grads for a while once they leave…can't believe it's been 4 years of uni already. Well, just got to make the best of time left with them…congratulation grads!

jumping on the bandwagon

Yes, it’s true. I’ve decided to jump onto the bandwagon and start a blog. Actually, I’ve been wanting to do this for a while now. Actually (again), I wanted to actually start up my own website with my own domain name and everything, but that required me to actually learn things like php and rss and all that web coding goodness. Since I don’t have the time to learn all that right now, wordpress & myphotoalbum will suffice. Maybe sometime in the near future I might actually make my own website…maybe

Well, today was Good Friday and it seems that every year, this seems to get more and more ordinary for me, like I’m getting use to the reason why we celebrate Easter. It’s not a good thing, in fact it’s pretty dangerous, ’cause I know that this weekend is the single most important reason why I believe what I believe and that I shouldn’t minimize it. But I guess after 22 years of Easter weekends, it’s started to become routine for me. *sigh* God, please help me to never minimize your great gift of salvation.

On a totally different note, Starfield’s new CD is coming out May 16! Woohoo! Just downloaded the EP with 2 songs from the new album and an acoustic version of “Filled with Your Glory” off of iTunes. It sounds SWEEET!!! Debating whether or not I should spend $23 to pre-order an autographed cd or just wait till it comes out and spend like $10 on it off iTunes. I’ll prolly get the autographed cd… :) Check it out!
