oodles of talent
It’s past 4 in the morning right now and I’m not remotely tired at all. Gotta love how exams screw up your sleeping schedule. So, what should I do when I can’t fall asleep? Write on my blog of course!
If you read my last post, I left a quote hinting at what my this post would be about. Johnson was able to guess correctly (and amazingly quick too: he commented on my facebook note a mere 36 minutes after it had been imported from here. and just to be sure I saw his answer, he again posted a comment on my original post…oh Johnson, so keen). So, what’s this post about? Wong Fu Productions! bonus points to Johnson, just as I promised!
If you know who and what Wong Fu Productions is, then you already know what I mean by “oodles of talent”. If not, allow me the privilege of being the first to introduce to them to you.
Wong Fu is made up of 3 guys from Cali, (Phil, Wes, & Ted) who went to school together at UCSD and now live together post-uni, and create some of the best videos I’ve ever seen. They started out creating these lip-sync music videos and soon expanded into creating shorts and even created a full-length feature film, all while finishing their post-secondary education. They’ve become a huge hit on the ‘net, with fans from all over the world (myself included) and are continuing with their media-making endeavours as their career now.
What makes their videos so good? Well, there are their comedic ones (like Yellow Fever) which just make you crack up like nothing else without being obscene or dirty. And then there are their more “serious” videos. These are the ones that fuelled my obsession for their work. Many of their videos are based on relationships, not just the romantic kind, but friendships as well. These are done so well, they’re just so real, something that most people can relate to, and something I definitely can relate to. My personal favourites are Just a Nice Guy and You’ve got a Friend. If you’ve got a half hour to spare, I definitely recommend you check these two series of videos out. Well worth your time. If you don’t have much time, check out this music video:

Now, if writing, directing, producing, editing, and whatever else goes into making these videos wasn’t more than enough evidence to show you what creativity and talent these guys have (and it is), they’ve got more up their arsenal. They’re also amazing photographers, animators, dancers, and composers. Not all 3 of them do all these things, but each of them do a few and do it very well. Talk about creative talent. Check out all of their stuff at wongfuproductions.com and you can see why I’ve got a bit of man-crush on these guys.
PS to all of you who wished me a happy birthday yesterday whether in person, facebook or text message: THANK YOU! I’ll never cease to be amazed with how many great people I know. Thanks and if I don’t see/talk to you in the next week or so, have a very Merry Christmas and a super awesome Happy New Year!
ramblings from a hotel lobby
So I’ve already been up for 7 hours (minus the hour and a half I was asleep on the plane) now and it’s only 11 in the morning. Good ol’ 7 am flights forcing you to leave the house at 4 am.
So I’m in St. Louis now for the tri-annual Urbana conference. Except I’m not quite there yet. As told in the title, I’m in the lobby of my hotel, leeching off the free wireless right now. My hotel room isn’t quite ready yet, so I’ve got some time to kill. So what am I going to do? Boast.
I’ve got the best friends world. I don’t know if I say this enough, but I am so blessed to have the friends that I do. For example, take 12 days ago. Just another average middle of exam period day. Trying to study during the day, had a meal together with the housemates, and had a great worship team practice at church that evening. But unbeknown to me, there was going to be more in store that night. Even though they were apparently so loud, I didn’t notice 15 or so friends congregating on the floor below me while I studied. Sometime that night (not really sure, I think it was around 10, but who knows), Tianne comes up and lures me away from studying with a cheese break. Who can say no to cheese? So I go downstairs and I’m greeted with a “cheesecake”, wine, fruit, chocolate fondue, and some of the greatest people in the world for a surprise birthday party. Absolutely floored. I wasn’t expecting it but it was awesome. Really made my day. Like I said, I’ve got the best friends in the world. Thanks guys, you have no idea how much you all mean to me!
’twas the before christmas
It’s Christmas eve. And what am I doing? Sitting in the basement, watching episodes of the West Wing. How so very Christmasy.
For some reason, this year, it just doesn’t feel like Christmas to me. Normally, I love this time of year and it’s awesome to celebrate. But this year, it feels like any other day of the year, except that I’m actually at home, in Leamington now. Maybe it’s because I’ve got a lot of things on my mind right now, like school and Urbana, or maybe because it was raining yesterday when it should have been snowing. But whatever it is, it’s kind of weird, not being in the Christmas mood mere hours away from the big day.
I’m just trying to remind myself, that this is a special time of the year. Not just because I’m home with family. Not just because I can catch up with friends. But because of Jesus. He may not have been born on December 25th. He may not have been born in the year 0 BC (he’s actually estimated to be born 6 years before Christ, ironic, yes). He may not have even been born in the winter. But he was born some 2000 years ago: the greatest gift to mankind, the hope of the world, the lover of you and me, was born. And that’s reason enough to celebrate.
Happy Birthday Jesus!
falling autumn
It’s that time of year once again. When the leaves change colour, school work builds up, and you don’t know what to wear in the morning because it’s cool in the morning/evening but warm in the afternoon. Stupid weird fall weather.
Great night last night. Scrumptious pizza and seafood at John’s Italian Cafe with many many friends, a little “surprise” cake and presents for the birthday gal and guy: Gizelle & Jon Chan, topped off with a viewing of “The Last Kiss.” Interesting movie about relationships, about how bad they can get messed, but also of how you mend them. Favourite line: “You can’t fail if you don’t give up.” So true.
Still struggling with getting up early so I can do my devos and just start the day off with God. Was suppose to wake up for the See You At The Pole prayer meeting at 8 this morning, but ended up waking up at 9:30 and missing my first class…*sigh*. I hope I can get into waking up early soon! Though I did wake up so late, I had a nice surprise found under my door: this food section from today’s TO Star which had this lovely full page pic/article of my favourite food: CHEESE! Thanks Giz, that made my day!
One last thing, many birthdays today: Happy Birthday Grace, Jon Chan, & Gizelle! Hope you guys have a good one!
